It's a part of our country that's inspired great artists and been home to many a famous figure in history - being so close to the capital makes it a hotspot for quick trips and weekend forays, romantic nights away from the noise of the city. But not only that, there's history and culture to uncover with this area being one of the best surviving medieval landscapes in northern Europe, criss-crossed by sunken droveways and small, steep-sided streams known as Gills. There are rare plant species to look out for, wildlife to spot and nuggets of iron to collect, leftover from the Roman and Tudor periods when it was the country's main iron-producing region.
Take walks through ancient woodlands or find yourself one of the award-winning vineyards this county is famed for, make your own way around the delightful towns and villages of the area or book into one of the many tourist attractions; the zoo, steam railway, Sky Tour and nature reserves galore.
