Small doubleThis oh-so-romantic shepherd's hut for two lies in the beautiful countryside of West Sussex and offers an idyllic, peaceful escape that's dog friendly too.
Just a mere two hours from London and nestled on the edge of the rolling hills of the South Downs near Pulborough, Isla Rose is a charming rural retreat for lovers seeking a break from the everyday. Tucked away and surrounded by leafy, mature trees, this stunning shepherd's hut boasts a fabulous outdoor seating area with a fire pit, while inside you'll find a delightful tiny home to call your own, cleverly designed to make use of the space and ensure a peaceful, relaxed holiday. One well-behaved dog is also most welcome here, so you and your furry friend can get out and about and explore the very best of West Sussex.
From the moment you start walking up the pathway to Isla Rose, you'll feel your worries slipping away. Tucked away with a grassy meadow to the front, the shepherd's hut is a pretty shade of blue, with steps leading up to the glass doors that open directly into the living space. Here, the kitchen area awaits for your culinary creations, whether that's fresh seafood from the nearby coast or scrumptious local goodies from a farm shop. There's everything on hand to help you rustle up meals - a gas oven and hob, Belfast sink, fridge, toaster and kettle - and all the other holiday essentials you'll need. To the left lies the delightful dining area where a table and bench seats await for romantic evening meals à deux, or for peaceful mornings over coffee and fresh pastries, pouring over a map and planning the days' adventures. When the sun sets, this end of the room cleverly transforms into the bedroom with a pull-down double bed, made for luxuriating in long lie-ins, with just the sound of the birds as your soundtrack. At the other end of the shepherd's hut you'll find the ensuite shower room for wake-me-up ablutions in the morning or for washing off the day's adventures at night, complete with WC and sink.
It doesn't stop at the shepherd's hut, however - step outside and there's a fabulous stretch of lawn to the front (perfect for games with your pooch) and a fabulous covered seating area with benches, table and a fire pit. The perfect spot whatever time of day, it's made for alfresco breakfasts on summer mornings, delightful dinners as the sun sets, or for wrapping up in blankets for a spot of star gazing, with perhaps a hot chocolate in hand, blissfully enhanced with a good dash of your favourite tipple.
Isla Rose lies on the edge of the South Downs National Park, not far from Pulborough. If you can bear to leave your woodland idyll, there's so much to see and do right on your doorstep. For walkers (and their dogs), there's a host of lovely paths, trails and bridleways to explore, such as the South Downs Way, the prehistoric fort of Chanctonbury Ring, the West Sussex Literary Trail that connects Horsham to Chichester and has links to William Blake and John Keats, and Cissbury Ring. For history buffs, there's places a-plenty to visit, such as Petworth House and Park, a 17th century house with a 700-acre deer park, Bignor Roman Villa, an ancient family home with glorious mosaic floors, the fortifications of Arundel Castle and Bramble Castle, or Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre. Alternatively, head to nearby Knepp, a fantastic 3,500-acre rewilding project that cares for endangered species and diverse habitats, and has walks, places to eat and a fantastic kitchen and shop. Wine lovers need to visit Bolney Wine Estate or Nyetimber Vineyard for a tour and tastings (and to bring a bottle or two home with you), while a trip to the coast is an easy drive away. Visit eclectic Brighton for fab places to eat and shops to explore, or head to Littlehampton Beach for a lazy day sunbathing and swimming. Chichester is also a must with its stunning cathedral and Bishop's Palace Gardens. Whatever you choose to do, there's plenty to keep you busy in stunning West Sussex!
