Sue’s 100 Day walk for the Penny Brohn UK Cancer Wellbeing Charity
In the newsSue Lloyd has known Classic Cottages for many years, as a regular guest and also as a holiday homeowner until 2021. In April 2023 following NHS screening, Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer and her cancer journey started.
Penny Brohn UK are a cancer health and wellbeing charity who have provided Sue with free resources and online group support sessions, including attending a retreat at their Bristol centre. They support any adult, with any cancer, anywhere in the UK and, to say thank you for their ongoing support Sue has taken on the challenge of walking the epic 630 miles of the South West Coast Path to raise funds.
Sue says “In order to raise much needed funds for Penny Brohn UK, I decided to walk the 630 miles of the South West Coastal Path (SWCP). I wanted my choice of fundraising activity to be a challenge to both my fitness and resolve and be something I would need to rise to with determination and effort, whilst at the same time giving something back. With my family connections in the South West of England, and a lifetime of holidays to the area, I am under no illusions that this will be an easy task. This is perhaps also the time to mention that I am somewhat afraid of heights but to succeed I will have to endure many narrow and steep cliff paths along the way! I plan to start out on 31st August 2024 and finish by 30th September 2025, avoiding the winter months whilst the path becomes more dangerous and allowing time to attend medical appointments and important events at home. I have chosen to walk daily over periods of two to three weeks, covering sensible distances to match my health and physical fitness. I intend to keep you all updated with my progress via Strava and by posting regular updates and photos on my JustGiving page”.
Classic Cottages have supported Sue throughout her journey and some of the team from our Head Office in Hayle were delighted to join her on a section of her walk on the Lizard Peninsula on the last day of April. Meeting at Church Cove on the hottest day of the year (so far), we teamed up on a stretch from Gunwalloe to Polurrian and on to Mullion Cove. The team, included Operations Manager Tanya and Lucy and Liz from Marketing who walked with Sue and Richard (Sue’s husband who gives her confidence to conquer her fear of heights, takes on the role of driver, running and walking sections of the path with Sue whilst helping her with logistics and arranging transport from start to finish each day).
Sue’s determination is inspirational, and despite ongoing health issues, she is focused on reaching her target of completion by September whilst along the way spreading the word of this amazing charity. Sue, you are an inspiration to us all!
