Classic joins Plastic Free Eastbourne for a beach clean
In the newsOn a sunny day in June we were delighted to support Plastic Free Eastbourne with a beach clean along the shore at Eastbourne, East Sussex.
Plastic Free Eastbourne is made up of a group of volunteers from businesses and the local community who strive to make the area plastic free. Working with Surfers Against Sewage and the Marine Conservation Society and headed by Oliver Sterno, the group work tirelessly cleaning beaches, reducing single use plastics, educating the local community and contributing towards a cleaner Eastbourne.
Members of our marketing team together with staff from our Battle office spent the morning with Oliver, helping to clean the beach of an array of plastic waste including bottles, cups and nylon fishing line. Beach cleans take place in four locations along the Eastbourne coast every month and we were delighted to support Oliver in making a difference.
As part of our company ethos to support community lead projects we also offered Oliver some funding to help with equipment. Oliver suggested that instead of equipment we purchase some children’s educational books from Wild Tribe Heroes for him to supply to local schools to help inform and inspire the next generation on ways to take care of our precious environment. Best selling author, Ellie Jackson has written eight books so far and we were delighted to be able to fund more books to be delivered to local schools in the Eastbourne area. These beautifully illustrated books tell children about environmental issues in a positive and inspiring way, perfect for inspiring the next generation of 'Wild Tribe Heroes'.
Oliver says “Plastic Free Eastbourne has been delighted to work closely with Classic Cottages and have hosted a Beach Clean at Beach Deck Café for them. We are most grateful for their donation of educational books by Ellie Jackson for us to sell. Even more so, we are grateful for their donation of 8 such books for 10 of our state Primary schools. This has encouraged Plastic Free Eastbourne to add to this so that every state Primary school in Eastbourne will receive a collection of these books. We intend giving these books personally to each of our 23 Primary schools and thereby develop our relationships more fully. It is our young people who will have the biggest impact on making the vital changes that will heal our planet”.

And Ellie Jackson, the inspirational author of the Wild Tribe Heroes collection says “I’m thrilled that Classic Cottages is helping to share these stories with so many children in Eastbourne. These books are all about empowering children to make a difference - whether that’s through recycling, litter picking, energy conservation, planting trees or simply caring about the world around them.”
