About Somerset

Somerset staycations are so easy to travel to, yet you can still feel a million miles away from your everyday. Somerset cossets you into the West Country from the lowlands of Sedgemoor, through the Quantocks and on to its tussle with Devon over Exmoor in the north. It may be famous for cider, cheese and flat level lands but this little county also has lots of hills to climb and its own coastline with Somerset cottages near the beach at Bridgwater Bay and other seaside towns such as Porlock Weir, Minehead, Dunster, not forgetting Watchet and Burnham-on-sea, all the way up to Weston-super-Mare.

The pretty village of Porlock is a popular base for walkers exploring the trails that criss-cross Somerset's moorland and coast, where you can start your day by the sea and end up in the depths of Exmoor, surveying the scene from a tor top. Nearby, Medieval Dunster draws those looking to soak up some Somerset culture and history.

From Withypool on Exmoor, across as far as Frome, there are holiday cottages in Somerset with views of rolling hills, flat expanses of greenery, panoramas of farming, cider and cheese among the Blackdown Hills, Mendip Hills and Quantock Hills. Don't forget to pay a visit to the world-famous Glastonbury for plenty of history and heritage, quirky independent shops and a walk up to Glastonbury Tor! Nearby is the beautiful city of Wells, with its pretty cathedral and local markets. Spend some time discovering the lesser known villages around Somerset, perfect for an afternoon of exploring, such as Wedmore and Axbridge, close to the Mendip Hills.

Holidays in Somerset

If you bring children on holiday in Somerset, a cottage with pool will be high on the agenda, with little ones rarely tiring of the chance to splash around over the summer. But you might not need it if you find a cottage near the beach, for endless days of memories bring made along the shores of the Bristol Channel. This option is great if you’re looking for a dog-friendly cottage too, with welcoming cottages in Somerset that allow dogs near the coastpath for sandy paw walks and in National Parks for mountainous treks over hill and vale.

If you’re looking for a little luxury on your holiday, whether it’s just the two of you or friends and family too, cottages in Somerset with hot tubs let you indulge in rest and relaxation day and night – a glass of bubbles is recommended while you’re sitting in the bubbles! And if you haven’t experienced a hot tub in the winter rain, it’s exhilarating…

Things to do in Somerset

Self catering holidays in Somerset let you stock up on the county’s famous cheeses (Cheddar!), apples and cider for picnicking on the Somerset Levels. There’s fresh produce on every corner, with village shops sourcing straight from the farms and town delis sourcing the best things to eat from across the county. There are also two cities in this very rural county, Bath and Wells, and a few small towns for shopping. Delight in the unexpected with visits to the little independent boutiques and take home one-off reminders. There are plenty of gorgeous gardens to discover in Somerset, including Hestercombe, Greencombe, East Lambrook Manor and many others.

Family friendly holidays in Somerset

For the more active, go from the experience of extensive networks of caves running under Cheddar and Ebbor Gorge to the other extreme of Dunkery Beacon, Somerset’s highest point. Pot-holing is a bit of an extreme sport and not everybody’s cup of tea, but a trip up a hill can be a gentle afternoon stroll or a mad race to the top on a mountain bike or horseback. Exploring the county on a horse is a great way to get a new perspective and go further than you might usually, so choose a cottage with livery for your own equine adventures, or look up one of the many riding schools in Somerset.
