A traditional pub and the smallest on the island. Nothing fancy but renowned for well kept real ales. Everyone and their dog are made very welcome.

Wheeler's Bay (350 yards)

Also known as Bonchurch. this is a small bay to the east of Ventnor accessed by walking along the sea wall from Ventnor or a concrete slope from the road above the bay. At high tide the sea sweeps right up to the sea wall, low tide exposes a sand and shingle beach. There are no facilities however dogs are allowed year round. There is no lifeguard cover here.

A scenic four and a half mile trek over undulating countryside with some lovely coastal views. Start from the car park and follow the details on the Isle of Wight website.

Nearest town

Ventnor (¼ mile)

Ventnor is the place to go if you enjoy a vibrant arts scene or botanical gardens. It seems a little warmer here all year-round, hence the flora and plentiful fish make it a great spot for anglers. Most of the island crab comes from here.

A warm welcome

We booked for a meal at The Taverners after first visiting there for a drink earlier in the week. We received a warm friendly welcome and the food was excellent, plenty of choice with daily specials and a bit different to the norm. . The service was excellent and very prompt. Their local brew was also good. I would definitely recommend this establishment and would visit again when I am next on the Isle.

The Pointer Inn (4 ¾ miles)

Traditional pub grub but with a difference. Locals are offered a bartering exchange system where they provide local produce in exchange for meals or drinks. Great idea and upholds their intent to use local products. A garden with views across the downs and a large terrace are available for summer dining. Child and dog friendly. You may wish to book; this is a very popular place.

This is a beautiful traditional pub that serves excellent food and has staff that will go the extra mile. I love that you can order some of the dishes from the menu as a smaller portion so there is no food waste. All food is locally sourced and they can even tell you the name of the person who grew it!

The Crab and Lobster Tap (½ mile)

A traditional pub with real ales and food served all day. Rings league matches are regularly played and also bar billiards. There's a large car park nearby and this is a convenient stopping place for the coastal path.

Cantina (½ mile)

With its very own bakery on site you are assured of fresh bread, pastries and cookies to accompany your coffee and tea. Open all day, every day, call in for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's best to book as space is limited.

Tramezzini (½ mile)

Chefs Adam and Giancarlo use their talents in the kitchen to create stunning dishes with Italian flair. Choose from risottos, authentic pastas and fresh seafood.
