An Adventure in Chichester

Have you ever considered a stay or a visit to Chichester in the lovely county of Sussex? If not, then it shall be my absolute pleasure to introduce you to the wonders and adventures of Chichester and the surrounding areas.

Chichester and the surrounding areas are full of history and adventure. Located between the South Downs Way and the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you are spoilt for choice on amazing places to go for adventures on foot.

Chichester Cathedral

Chichester itself has a 900-year-old cathedral in the city centre. It has a unique selection of architecture, parts from the Normans and others, like the spire, built by the Victorians. A building this old is bound to show some of its history in other ways too like some medieval carvings.

Halnaker Windmill

The Halnaker Windmill is an iconic feature to Chichester. Standing proud on top of Halnaker Hill the windmill has some stunning views of the surrounding area and on a clear day you can see the sea! Visiting the windmill is great for those who love a brisk walk as there is now a trail starting at the Boxgrove Village Hall car park. To make this walk even better, there is a pub en-route!  The Anglesey Arms Public House is perfectly placed for a well earned pint after taking in the views at the windmill.Halnaker Windmill

The Chichester Wall Walk

For anyone who likes a breath of fresh air, you can walk around the heart of the city on foot. Built when the Romans were here to protect the city, it has stood the test of time with 80% of the original walls' still standing. It has been made into a mile and a half long walk so you can enjoy the city from a new angle.

Chichester Festival Theatre

The Chichester Festival Theatre is one of the UK’s flagship theatres and is renowned for its very high standard of performances. The annual festival season is from April to November but there are shows going on throughout the year, especially around Christmas.

Fishbourne Roman Palace and Gardens

Just as you are about to leave Chichester on the road heading to Portsmouth there is this brilliant place for a day out. A Roman archaeological site with some outstanding exhibitions. The mosaics here are some of the largest in Britain; the most famous one being Cupid on a Dolphin. They are spectacular. There is so much more to see here. You can explore the underfloor heating systems or, if you like greenery, you can explore the gardens that have been replanted in the original layout and using the same plants that would have been growing when the Romans were here. It is a brilliant day out for all ages.

Nearby

Near to Chichester there is Portsmouth, a harbour town with a strong naval history. The Mary Rose Museum has five hundred years worth of history to explore and thousands of artefacts to have a look at since she was recovered in the 1970s.

Goodwood is just up the road, with the famous Revival happening each year. There are events throughout the year and the Motor Circuit is open all year round. Certainly worth an explore.

Westwittering beach, regarded as one of the loveliest in the south east of England, is just below Chichester and during the summer is a great place to be, albeit slightly packed. When the summer holidays are over though it quietens down and the more out of season you get, the more likely you’ll have the beach to yourself!
