Traditional pub food in a lovely setting
Good traditional pub food, open fires, one side carpeted , the other with old slate floors so it's OK to have muddy boots and dogs. On the Devon side of the Tamar just next to the ancient Horsebridge.

Very traditional but welcoming pub - good home cooked food and a nice open fire. Very atomospheric and popular with the locals - a beautiful setting that would be hard to beat. You must try the beer from the pub's own micro-brewery if you visit.

This sandy cove is quite sheltered and offers a good safe place to swim. There are also great places to snorkel at high tide.

The greater estate is a wonderful place to take your dog. Wander along miles of wooded paths with views of the river and surrounding countryside. Walk to the Old Quay and Discovery Centre or perhaps take a boat trip on the river in summer.

Disappointed
As National Trust members we were very disappointed to find this dog friendly estate is in fact not that dog friendly at all. Even in very hot weather, they do not want your dog to put their paws on the grass. This is potentially harmful and whilst I understand manicured lawns do not want dogs wandering over them. I cannot understand why they’re not allowed to walk on the rest of the grass. On the day that we went, it was cloudy on arrival but we left early because it got too hot and the tarmac paths were a hazard to our Dog. Weighing in at 30 kg he is too heavy to carry. I saw many people totally disregarding the very patronising stance taken by the National Trust staff at reception. To be honest, if we were actually paying rather than members, we would’ve turned around and left. You are either dog friendly or you are not. Why do you not just keep manicured/ formal parts Dog free like many other stately homes do? That is quite acceptable in my opinion but your approach is not

Great Day Out
We had a lovely day out here. So much to see. The walk around the area is free so that is what we did. We also took a picnic so the only expensive is the car park fee. The house, mill and car park are free for National Trust members or £10, £6 and £5. The grounds are well signposted to walk round and it is mostly level. Nice shop and cafe too.

Perched on the banks of the great Tamar River, the historic waterway that divides Devon and Cornwall, Calstock is a pretty village full of whitewashed cottages that tumble down to the water’s edge. The skyline is dominated by an imposing viaduct that spans the river; an endless stream of boats of all shapes and sizes sail through the arches throughout the day. It is impossible to visit Calstock without getting on the water at least once – try a trip on the Tamar Passenger Ferry – a lovely open wooden boat which plies the river between Calstock and the National Trust’s historic Cotehele Quay.

A medieval house in amazing condition, with fabulous collections of armour, textiles and furniture from the period. The estate is open daily from dawn to dusk throughout the year, dogs are welcome in the grounds and there's miles of woodland paths and countryside to explore.

Stoic British carried on in AWFUL weather!
Wonderful House, Gardens, grounds and shops..AWFUL half term weather, but we braved it all! NB the house has NO electric lights so visibility in the house is limited on dull days!. Mill lovely and the walk down from the house through the gardens and past the chapel to the quay side and then the mill was lovely....a little slippery in places as it a little steep in parts and was SO wet..but we all remained upright! Lovely Cornish ice creams at the Quay and great bread flour can be bought at the mill shop. Hurrah for the VERY helpful and lovely mini bus driver who can ferry any less able bodies around the 3 sites...

Cotehele is a beautiful National Trust property - I recommend walking the wider estate, including the folly behind the property which gives you a bird's eye view for miles! The walk down through the quay to the mill is stunning, and the waterwheel and mill race is currently being renovated, which is an interesting project. You can even buy flour that has been milled on site.

A medieval gem with a magical garden sloping down to the Tamar. Plenty of walks on the Estate. Highly recommended are the scones at the restaurant on Cotehele Quay - just the thing at the end of a stroll along the river.
Tree-top ladders, rope bridges and zip wires to get the adrenalin pumping.

Brilliant Fun
My partner & children have done this and they loved it. The staff were fantastic & the place is very well run. Highly recommended.
You'll be spoilt for choice here with walking trails, mountain biking, bike hire, geocaching, tree top activities and bushcrafts. Plenty to keep all the family occupied and there's a cafe, perfect for when you need to re-fuel.

Great Walks
A Great area for lots of walk choices and superb views, along with tons of history of the area and its evolution. The car park is chargeable, so go prepared, the toilets were locked when we visited in November, so don't rely on those either! The cafe wasn't open and did not look as if it had been operating for a long time, so perhaps it is no longer a going concern? It all looked a bit run down from our last visit around 9 years ago. That said, as a place for a good walk, long or short, with many hard tracks, it is a great place to visit.

Fantastic woodland experiences for everyone.
Everyone can enjoy tree surfing, mountain biking, walking, cycling, running and horse riding along miles of well maintained trails, set amongst the ruins of the tin mining era. A wide variety of walks from level to more challenging take in stunning scenery between the Tamar river and Morwellham Quay.
Guided canoe trips on the River Tamar. Take in the scenic views of Cotehele up river and paddle passed the village of Calstock and into the wilds of the upper river.

Fantastic!
Canoe Tamar are a really friendly organisation offering a fantastic opportunity to explore the Tamar. We did an early morning canoe (timings depend on the tides, but early morning means no-one else around) from Cotehele Quay, up the Tamar past Calstock and under the viaduct, almost as far as Morwellham Quay. I have never seen so many fish jumping out of the water - literally hundreds! The guide was really helpful and friendly, and anyone could give it a go, as long as they can get in and out of the canoes (the Canadian type, open and fairly stable). I would highly recommend this as a way to see the riverside from a totally different angle.
A beach cafe in the most rustic sense - a beachside shed with some outdoor seating. It is a National Trust-owned hut, but run by a local couple who provide 'Feast Nights' - now made famous by their appearance on ITV's 'Cornwall with Caroline Quentin'. You need to buy tickets, but the hut is generally open to everyone, except during the winter, so check times on their Web site.

Walk up an Appetite
Legendary Hidden Hut - we coastal walked to eat a lunch there. No bookings taken just queue. Fresh food cooked daily in a relaxed clifftop setting eating outdoors. We chose chicken tagine and a flatbread - from the options. Lovely stuff! Check them out online.

Best Tomato soup ever tested
Wow what a place! Nestled behind the beach and within walking distance. Absolutely amazing food, the menu is mouthwatering! Don’t be put off by the queues, service is very quick. We had the tomato soup and it was ‘the best tomato’s soup ever tasted’ ! Such amazing flavours! Definitely worth a visit! Beautiful views too! Well done the hidden hut and keep up the good work!

A lovely experience
We can now see why this place is so popular! The service is excellent very friendly staff who take a minute to ask you about your visit while serving you. The food is beautifly cooked all be it presented in a takeaway box or cup the taste is incredible. My husband opted for the smoked beef chilli I had the Dahl served with flat bread both delicious. It was towards the end of our holiday otherwise we would have had lunch there every day.

Lovely little walk from the car park where you come across some steps, if you then take the steps immediately going up you then come across the stunning Hidden Hut, where the food is fantastic, may be a little pricey, but so worth it, especially sitting on the benches

Perfect situation and great food
If you didn’t already know it, this a now a justly famous spit just above a lovely Cornish beach.
Splendid food - some fusion inspired and some more typical local Cornish. Great atmosphere. Also they have now a great Hidden Hut cookbook. Such a happy mix of photos and recipes!

Being relatively local to the area, we felt it was time to see if this often-mentioned beach cafe lived up to it's reputation....and it did! On a sunny August Sunday, the beach was busy and so was the Hidden Hut. Be prepared to queue - for quite a while - but once you've selected which of the mouthwatering options to go for, you've plenty of choice of places to sit and enjoy the really well cooked food and the amazing location. No doubt this will be the first of many visits to come!

Stunning place for a delicious lunch! Pricey but great quality. Locally sourced and freshly made. Busy on Bank holidays but worth the queue. Soups are always fabulous as are the pasties, pulled pork baps and sausage rolls. We were lucky enough to get tickets for a feast night once and it was a most memorable and special event.
