DoubleA romantic woodland wonderland awaits at Hush, a stunning 'truffle' house deep in the heart of Devon that's all about getting back to nature and a more peaceful way of life - bliss!
If you go down to the woods today, you're definitely in for a big surprise. Nestled among the trees down a woodland path, you'll find Hush, a nestling, gleaming 'truffle', aka a wooden, domed, oh-so-welcoming cabin that's your own private haven. Inviting you to step off of the rat race for a while and embrace a slower pace of life, Hush brings a simplicity that makes things that little easier, with pared back luxury encouraging you to take time for yourself, whether that's enjoying languorous lie-ins in bed or gently swinging from the hammock with just the sound of birdsong as your playlist.
Tucked away in the quietest, wildest corner of Honeydown - a gorgeous collection of five 'truffles' in 15 acres of private oak woodland, each 50 yards apart - Hush is the epitome of eco glamping. Enjoying the most secluded position furthest away from the main entrance, take a gentle stroll along sun-dappled paths to reach your conker-like hideaway, protected by a canopy of trees. A romantic countryside escape for couples, there's also additional space for up to two children if you're a family.
Take the steps up inside and you'll find an open plan space with comfy double wooden bed swathed in winter tog duvets, bedding and linens for extra cosiness, a log-burner for cooler nights, squidgy bean bag, free-standing hammock and an upcycled table and chairs. Lighting is via battery-operated lamps, and there's plenty of blankets to snuggle up in. Should you have little ones in tow, up to two fold-out beds can be provided for children, with babies welcome too - you'll just need to bring your own travel cot with you.
Outside, there's a fantastic 'cookeaterie', a sheltered spot to cook meals and eat, so there's no problem if it's raining. Equipped with a gas hob, gas-fired barbecue and an aquaforno (an ingenious combo of barbecue and pizza oven), there's plenty of unique cooking options that provide plenty of opportunities for rustling up fabulous al fresco feasts to be enjoyed around the wooden dining-table. In addition, there's a fantastic fire-pit that's made for sitting next to as twilight descends, perhaps roasting a marshmallow or two and sipping on hot chocolate as you listen to the call of the owls and watch bats flit among the trees.
You'll find your own kitchen prep area, along with a fridge with small freezer compartment, just a short walk away at the cabin, a shared space with the other 'truffles'. Here, you'll also find your own allocated bathroom with a hot shower and flushing toilet, and mains power with sockets for charging any electrical items you may have. Being off grid, Hush is WiFi free, making it the perfect destination for a digital detox.
With 15 acres of woodland to explore, Honeydown is a beautiful setting that's been established for at least 200 years, with areas dating back much further. The owners, keen to develop a more natural woodland (it was previously a commercial plantation), is gently allowing the site to rewild naturally, becoming once again a peaceful habitat for wildlife and plant species. Beyond Honeydown lies open farmland with just sheep as neighbours, but pop in the car and you have lots of places to visit close by. Set between Dartmoor and the north Devon coast, Hatherleigh is the nearest town and just a short 10 to 15 minute walk away. Known as the smallest town in Devon, it's home to two pubs, a cafe and a small selection of shops that are well worth exploring. If you fancy a day at the coast, pop to Bude for a swim in the sea pool, a walk along the lovely sandy beach and a picnic. Alternatively, don walking boots and drive 15 minutes to explore Dartmoor's 368 square miles of open moorland, dotted with lakes, rivers and woodland and pretty villages. Other highlights include the Tarka Trail, the longest traffic-free cycle path in the UK (the lovely owners of Hush can hire bikes for you ahead of your stay), Rosemoor Gardens for a floral display and afternoon tea, and Meldon Reservoir for its stunning views at 900 feet above sea level.
