The south coast of Cornwall is often thought to be a gentler landscape than the north, with picturesque harbours, flat calm seas and subtropical shrubbery. This is why Mullion Cove broke all the rules and stereotypes and stunned us from the moment we arrived for our weekend break at Verity, an idyllic apartment nestled on the hillside of the cove.
When & where: Early spring on the south coast of Cornwall
When we approached the cove, a few scenes we’d pictured in our imaginations rung true. In front of us was a very picturesque harbour, with fishing boats hauled up the slipway and lobster pots stacked up neatly to one side.
However we were not expecting the landscape that surrounded this sheltered cove, and it totally mesmerised us when we arrived! The cliffs were so striking with their rugged edges and broken rock faces.
By taking a holiday in Cornwall in late winter/early spring did feel like we caught a magical time of year. Seeing plants in bud, breathing in the cold crisp fresh air but having the luxury of longer sunnier days. A perfect time to get away for a short break or full week in winter and early spring.
After we took in the breath taking scenery upon arrival, we then went onto find our the place we were calling "home" for the weekend...
Where we stayed: Verity
My friend and I decided to have girls weekend away and indulge in a couple of days of total luxury. And we got everything we wished for! We stayed in the fabulous Verity, a two-bedroom apartment in Mullion Cove.
The apartment is part of a collection of self-catering properties owned by the Mullion Cove Hotel, which is only a few minutes’ walk away. The connection to the hotel meant we had the best of everything. The freedom to chill at home by the fire, rustle up a feast in the evening and relax on our private balcony (and in our own private hot tub!) whilst having all of the facilities of the hotel close by.
When we arrived at Verity, it instantly made you feel calm and relaxed. Peaceful, bright, fresh and beautifully furnished. It oozed coastal charm in every direction. The living space was lovely and the open plan kitchen was very well equipped, including an Nespresso machine and a great selection of teas and hot chocolates. Both bedrooms had an understated luxury to them and both had en-suites. The outlook from the apartment took my breath away, looking down the steep sided valley down to the harbour and to the ocean beyond.
Activities: Strolls, spas and sea dips!
After enjoying the sun soaked living room, we wandered down to the harbour to get up close and personal with the local wildlife and watch the waves roll in passed the harbour walls. You know, if you ever wanted to do the same from the comfort of your own home, you can always watch Mullion Cove from the live webcam in the harbour. Take a look here.
Next on our itinerary was something we’d both been really looking forward to – the spa! Mullion Cove Hotel knew exactly what they were doing when they built this luxurious spa, only a few years ago. The whole experience from the moment you walked in the doors was relaxing, refreshing and totally perfect. The main spa offers a selection of treatments, all available to book pre arrival. Just take a look here. They also offer all guests who book the self-catering apartments with Classic Cottages an exclusive price of £25 per guest to use the spa facilities and 10% off all treatments.
Whilst we were there, we enjoyed the indoor and outdoor pool, the sauna as well as the very tranquil Himalayan salt laconicum. For a girls’ weekend away, it was a great way to spend the afternoon and catch up.
We strolled back to our apartment in the early evening to catch the last of the summer rays from our balcony before preparing a feast and lighting the fire - heaven! We did pop outside onto the balcony later on and admired the starlit sky.
The next day we braved a dip in the sea first thing in the harbour. This definitely woke us up! We then scuttled back up the hill to the warmth of our apartment to have breakfast before checking out. Before hitting the road we decided to stop at the hotel to have a coffee and take in the spectacular view one last time. Sitting in the hotel’s luxurious lounge for a minute or two before heading back to reality was a perfect round off to the trip.
For a holiday away from the world, Verity in Mullion Cove was perfect.
