TwinResting on the banks of the River Fowey, The Moorings is a wonderfully warm and inviting waterside retreat in the heart of Lostwithiel, where the town’s friendly charm meets the soothing pace of life by the water. Arranged over four floors, this beautifully presented three bedroom terraced home carries a quiet sense of history from its days as part of the former railway buildings, it now offers a place for living well, unwinding and enjoying everything this delightful corner of Cornwall has to offer. A short, easy walk from the town centre, and with the railway station just down the road, it’s ideal for a relaxed, car-free stay.
Life naturally gathers on the first floor, where the open-plan living space has been elevated to make the most of the river views. Here, cooking, dining and relaxing blend effortlessly. Mornings begin with coffee, leisurely breakfasts and gentle chatter around the dining-table planning the day ahead, while evenings unfold over delicious suppers and the simple pleasure of being together. The balcony invites you to step outside and embrace the true delights of the riverside setting (please supervise children on the balcony).
On the ground floor, a cosy snug provides a welcoming retreat for anyone seeking a quiet corner to read, watch a film, or slip out to the patio and listen to the soft hush of the river drifting past.
Across the upper floors, the bedrooms offer privacy, comfort and a sense of sanctuary. A king-size room with its own en suite, a stylish double beside the family bathroom, and a Moroccan-inspired twin on the top floor with its own en suite create flexible accommodation for both families or friends.
Step outside and the river becomes part of daily life. The patio sits right at the water’s edge. A serene spot for morning stillness, lazy afternoons with a book, or al fresco meals at any time of day, all set to the gentle sound of the water drifting past.
Beyond the front door, Lostwithiel’s independent shops, antique dealers, artisan makers, cafes and welcoming pubs are all within an easy stroll. It’s a delightful town, rich in history and community spirit, with markets, festivals and riverside or country walks adding to its charm.
A visit to the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery is also a must, with a shop, nursery and an excellent cafe with sweeping views over the ruins of Restormel Castle. It’s well worth combining with a wander up to the castle completing a perfect morning or afternoon out.
From here, some of Cornwall’s most iconic experiences lie close at hand, including the historic house, parkland and network of cycling trails at Lanhydrock (National Trust), the world-renowned Eden Project, and the stylish sailing town of Fowey. A little further along the coast, you can explore the historic harbour and tall ships at Charlestown, while nearby Polkerris and Par offer classic days by the sea.
For a complete change of scenery, the dramatic landscape of Bodmin Moor provides endless opportunities for walking and cycling — with the welcome prospect of a cosy moorland pub to refuel along the way.
