The stunning World Heritage Jurassic Coast stretches right into east Devon and, just a few miles inland from magical Budleigh Salterton on the coast. Woodbury Common with its Iron Age fort on the skyline and close to Coleridge's historic home town of Ottery St Mary, a dedicated meadow at Knightstone Farm awaits you - the setting for Otter's Holt, a shepherd's hut for four and Beaver's Lodge, a safari tent also for four.
This wonderful glamping site is in an enclosed meadow of approximately one and a half acres. Here you will share the setting with an intriguing range of wildlife; foxes, deer, badgers, an otter if you are lucky and, quite amazingly, the wild beavers that live secretly by the river bank - really! Otter's Holt is a beautifully handcrafted shepherd's hut with a king-size double bed and pull-down/up bunk-beds (2'6" wide) within its clever, space saving design.
The fully fitted kitchen includes a mini fridge and mini oven with double hob (run on gas), and there is an en suite shower-room with shower, wash-basin and proper flushing loo. Set at an angle to Beaver's Lodge you will feel quite private and have your own large patio-area - complete with a wood-fired hot tub and table and chairs to the front and sun loungers and delightful pizza oven to the side of the hut - a great place for soaking up the sun and enjoying the fabulous views and sounds of the countryside.
You will have a real taste of self-sufficiency at Otter's Holt as there is no electricity; instead, a generous supply of firewood is provided throughout your stay for the wood-burner, which will keep you cosy and warm (the hut is fully insulated too). There is a solar panel to power the lighting and charge your mobile if needs be. Your first bag of logs for the hot tub is included and the owner will top-up your supplies as required - all at a very reasonable cost. There is even a fire-pit to complete the scene for this very special glamping experience. A little cabin in one corner of the meadow houses a book exchange and a few games to play, as well as doubling up as the log store.
Knightstone is a working family farm and therefore cattle from the dairy herd will be grazing in some of the fields, but the glamping meadow is completely enclosed.
On your doorstep, for you to explore and enjoy, are a further 60 acres of farmland, including a wide curve of the River Otter where nature has created an 'island'. Wander through a little copse where steps lead down to a bridge over a spring-fed stream that feeds a beautiful wildlife lake, set in a spacious meadow complete with enclosed play area, picnic table and swing chair. The wildlife lake is completely fenced but the river, though shallow and sandy in places, is not, so please take care. Walk on through the fields to pick up the ancient travellers' paths to Ottery St Mary (just a half-hour stroll) or further on to the traditional village of Tipton St John, where there is an excellent pub.
Open plan living-room with kitchen, dining and bedroom areas. Wood-burner, gas cooker (two ring hob and mini oven), mini gas fridge, king-size double bed (5') and pull down bunk-beds (2'6" recommended for children only)
Shower-room with shower, WC and wash-basin
Please note that the hut may be unsuitable for a baby during the months of October to April due to the colder weather. Otter's Holt can comfortably sleep 2 plus a cot, or 4 persons without a cot (due to limited space). The power at Otter's Holt is solar-powered and therefore limited - there is enough power for the lights and to charge a phone. The owner has kindly provided an in-car hair dryer for guests' use.
