Super-kingMagical Barn is nestled on the edge of the Dark Sky Park in Northumberland amid green hills and woodland and from the moment you step out of your car and turn the corner to catch your first glimpse of your holiday haven you are transported to life in the slow lane. Telling a tale of craftmanship and nostalgia this barn conversion is storybook architecture at its finest, with arrow slit windows, a vaulted ceiling and a minstrels' gallery, this fantastic retreat could have come straight from the pages of a fairy tale.
Turn the key and let yourself into the magical living space with quirky beams and natural stone walls and discover a homely blend of rustic charm and contemporary touches. With a wood-burning stove at one end and an original spiral staircase with cast iron balustrades at the other, leading up to the minstrels' gallery, and down to the bedrooms, this magnificent space promises a sanctuary for escaping reality.
For indoor entertainment you'll find a large Smart TV and wicker baskets filled with a selection of board games. Or why not slip outside to the decked balcony overlooking the valley with its stream and mini waterfall.
Beneath the gallery you will come across the stylish farmhouse kitchen with granite topped island and a very useful American-style fridge/freezer.
The enchanting spiral staircase leads down to the delightful bedrooms, both with their own access to outdoor seating in woodland surroundings. The spacious bathroom is found at the end of the corridor with a window to the outside woodland world of ferns, shrubs and trees.
Outside the barn you will find the communal courtyard with table and chairs. This is shared with Magical Cottage (5997) which you can book together if you wish to share your experience with others. From this area you can climb the hill to get a great view across the countryside or take a walk through the owner's woodland.
After you have discovered the grounds of Magical Barn, climbed the hill to take in the view and petted the owners' sheep on the way down, it will be time to explore further afield. Please note that the owners live on site but are very mindful of guests.
There is so much history and heritage in this area that you cannot fail to be charmed by everything you see. So close to Hadrian's Wall it would be a sin not to take advantage and walk along a stretch and visit the notorious Sycamore Gap where a striking new sculpture, from the original tree trunk, has been set. Or go all Roman and visit Vindolanda the famous fort and ancient village complete with bathhouse ruins. Don't miss the museum with an original Roman boxing glove! On the way you will pass the Roman Army Museum with its reconstructions and 3D film. Further along Military Road, The Twice Brewed Inn offers a great meal alongside stargazing, and with clear skies you can see the Milky Way arching across the sky.
Once you have had your fill of ancient history you can roam a little further and explore the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines range. Visit the pretty village of Alston, which appears to tumble down the hill, and take a ride on the restored South Tynedale Railway through the hills. You could brave the high road through the North Pennines (B6277) and take a look at Ashgill Force and maybe walk through the magical waterfall woods to High Force Waterfall, both spectacular places to visit.
For quiet times with less travel why not drop in at the Greenhead cafe, bistro and pub for an enjoyable meal. For a change of scenery pop along to the bustling town of Hexham with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. There is something for everyone in this beautiful part of the country and Magical Barn is the perfect place to start from.
