KingWelcome to the ultimate get-away-from-it-all cliffside escape. Out of this world views, super stylish interiors, fresh air by the bucketful and a location that's second to none. Perched on the cliff high above beautiful Whitsand Bay, with no near neighbours and breathtaking views of the sea and sky that stretch as far as the eye can see, Captain Blake's is the perfect retreat for romantic escapes, solo adventures and any four-legged friend in tow. This is a place to take time out and embrace the wonderful world all around us.
Pack up your rucksack and pop on those walking boots as you need to head off along the coastal path (around 700 steps/550 metres) that leads you to this little piece of heaven on earth - where the only passing traffic is the odd kestrel, seagull or peregrine falcon. Bliss.
Enjoy leisurely meals al fresco style from sunrise to sunset watching the comings and goings of coastal life - from sailing vessels and surfers to porpoises and dolphins - and, as day turns to night, marvel at the changing scene as celestial displays take to the skies.
Beautifully styled and furnished in a palette of blue and neutral tones with comfort and relaxation high on the agenda, the inside perfectly complements the surroundings. The windows frame the view, whether you are snuggled up on the sofa in front of the wood-burner, enjoying a hearty lunch at the dining-table or lingering a little too long in bed each morning, take time to stop and simply gaze at what is ahead of you. And if you need to look a little closer there's even a telescope provided.
This truly is a retreat; with no WiFi to distract you can switch off entirely if you choose, but there is good 4G coverage for occasional contact with the real world. Of course, there's all the other mod-cons needed with a fully-equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, super sleek shower-room and even an outdoor shower, ideal to rinse off sandy dogs and bodies.
Located on Captain Blake's Point, named after a 17th Century Commander of the Commonwealth who took his last voyage past this piece of coastline, you are in Cornwall's beautiful 'forgotten corner' and there is much to discover.
The coastal footpath is a few steps from your front door and what better way to enjoy this beautiful scenery than on foot. Tracks lead from the path down the beach below (please take care) where at low tide there is a three mile stretch of golden sand - surprisingly it never gets busy! Want to have fun on the water? The Eddystone Cafe (seasonal) has all the gear you need for surfing, body boarding and kayaking and, if you have never tried it before, they even offer lessons in surfing and coasteering as well, so there's no excuse not to give it a go.
If you prefer to take things at a more gentle pace, the historic houses and gardens of Mount Edgcumbe and Antony (NT) are close by or discover the charm of the twinned coastal villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, with their winding streets, pastel coloured cottages and a great choice of places to eat and drink.
For a complete contrast, those in need of city life can take the foot ferry from Cremyll across to the maritime City of Plymouth to visit the historic Barbican, famous Plymouth Hoe and Royal William Yard. But really, why go anywhere at all? Simply stay at Captain Blake's Retreat, tucked away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, soak up that view and chill.
