Combining the seafaring joys of the coast with the wildlife-rich habitats of wetlands, the Broads National Park in Norfolk is perfectly placed for a holiday by - and on - the water. Think peaceful walks along the many winding waterways and salt-kissed picnics watching the world float past.
Oh yes, nothing quite beats a holiday by the sea, especially when you can leave the land behind and take to the waters yourself. Undoubtedly one of the best things to do while staying in Norfolk, here’s everything you need to know about traditional sailing with Hunter’s Yard.
What is Hunter’s Yard
Hunter’s Yard has been operating for almost 100 years, since the first boat shed was built in Ludham. Since then, a beautiful fleet of traditional Norfolk Broads yachts has become the crowning glory of the boat yard, plastering smiles on faces to this day - it’s actually the last remaining fleet of its kind. The yard still boasts the same atmosphere and warm welcome as it did in the 1930s, with visitors flocking to marvel at the incredible craftsmanship and set sail themselves.
Alongside the day trips, Hunter’s Yard is also a sailing charity that works tirelessly to inspire young people through the revitalising pastime of sailing. The charity provides educational and recreational opportunities, as well as carrying out important restoration projects on the historic fleet.
Fleet
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or you want to dip your toe into the wonderful world of sailing, Hunter’s Yard has a beautiful boat to suit. Fans of the 1974 adaptation of Arthur Ransome’s beloved Swallows and Amazons can spend a magical day on one of the boats featured in the film - a draw that has brought in sailors from all over the world. Embark on your own whimsical adventure for a half-day sail or a full-day experience - packing a picnic to enjoy along the way, of course!
Looking to set sail with the family in tow? Hunter’s Yard’s fabulous Half Deckers combine the magic of old-school sailing with a little modern luxury, inviting you to make the most of your day out on the water, while the big and beautiful Lullaby class offers spacious 4-berth options with plenty of room for all your day gear. You’ll also find a selection of winsome watercrafts with engines, giving you that extra push on still days.
Learn to sail
New to sailing? Hunter’s Yard boasts excellent instructors who can get you learning the ropes in no time. The ‘Learn to Sail Holidays’ invite you to embark on a week-long tuition, with the last two days offering the opportunity to take the boat out on your own. You can even bring the dog! At the end of the week, you’ll leave with an official Royal Yachting Association qualification alongside a boat-load of memories to cherish for years to come.
Things to do while sailing
Teeming with wildlife, the Norfolk Broads is the perfect place to spot some of the area’s winged inhabitants. From colourful kingfishers darting into the water to graceful herons as they wade through the peaceful rivers, twitchers will be in their element sailing through the Broads. You might even spot the likes of otters, so make sure to keep those eyes peeled.
What better way to embrace life on the water than taking your boat to a welcoming pub? Oh yes, the Norfolk Broads has a veritable smorgasbord of waterside pubs, either with or near a mooring. The White Horse is a 5-minute walk from the free moorings at Neatishead Staithe and offers exceptional food in a welcoming setting, while The Bridge Inn in Acle boasts spectacular riverside views and private moorings to boot. For those sailing with the pooch, a visit to The New Inn is a must as the dog-friendly pub promises a gorgeous garden by the river with lots of covered seating for those sunny riverside afternoons.
