Meadows Barn is on the edge of the tranquil Dorset village of Halstock, with far-reaching views over the surrounding countryside, ideal for a family holiday or a great base for friends to explore beautiful west Dorset and the magnificent World Heritage Jurassic Coast, just 14 miles away. This detached reverse-level building on the site of former stables has been completely re-built to offer contemporary accommodation with three en suite bedrooms.
The stylish open plan sitting/kitchen/dining-room is the hub of this holiday home, where you can plan your adventures or just relax and gaze at the fields that surround you. The modern well-equipped kitchen allows you to leisurely create a holiday masterpiece for everyone to sit down and enjoy together. The largest of the bedrooms is on the ground floor and the other two are on the first floor, all have their own televisions and space to escape for a quiet read.
A gentle stroll into the village gives you the opportunity to enjoy the country air and will take you to the community shop and Post Office for a morning newspaper, fresh bread, local produce and holiday treats. The owners live next door and can suggest some fabulous walks from Meadows Barn, one that will take you along to the picturesque reservoir at Sutton Bingham.
A short drive will take you to nearby village pubs: the Fox at Corscombe, a warm and friendly traditional local pub; the Winyard's Gap Inn at Chedington with beautiful views from the beer garden, or the award-winning Acorn Inn at Evershot. A visit to the small town of Beaminster is a must for 'foodies', boasting both Brassica and The Ollerod for excellent food in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Head south towards the Jurassic Coast and you will not be disappointed – spectacular cliff formations and stunning coastline with Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door bringing past geography lessons into sharp focus. From Old Harry Rocks in the east all the way to Exmouth further west this dramatic coastline really does deserve its World Heritage status. Search for fossils at Charmouth beach or Lyme Regis, where you can visit both fossil and dinosaur museums. Lyme has working fishing boats in the little harbour protected by its iconic Cobb, and offers boat trips, a great selection of cafes, pubs, restaurants, independent shops and a beach with summer watersports.
If you are a National Trust member you will find plenty to explore in this part of the world – Montacute House, Barrington Court and Stourhead, which is particularly spectacular in the spring when the azaleas and rhododendrons are in bloom, all are a short car journey. The Haynes Motor Museum is just 14 miles from Halstock and has the UK's largest exhibition of cars and motorbikes dating back to the beginning of the last century, or nearby Yeovilton is home to the Fleet Air Arm Museum, which has an extensive collection of military and civilian aircraft.
If you feel like honing your culinary skills whilst on holiday, the Lesley Waters Cookery School is in the next village of Closworth, where she teaches in small groups in her own kitchen. If all the above sounds just too exhausting, you can simply sit in the garden at Meadows Barn and enjoy the sounds of the countryside.
