Glamping at Black Pig Retreats allows you to escape the everyday; park your car, load your luggage onto the farm's all-terrain vehicle and your countryside adventure begins, canvas living with a little of the luxury that we all deserve. Nestled in a south-facing wildflower meadow, with magnificent views over the Blackmore Vale, you could spend your whole holiday at Black Pig Retreats, exploring the woodlands, footpaths and trails that surround you.
Murciano is pitched halfway up a large wildflower meadow on a raised platform, perfect for enjoying the spectacular sunsets with a glass of something delicious, the stars look magnificent from this rural retreat, and the calling of owls will make this a holiday to remember.
This stylish Spanish themed safari tent, named after a domestic pig from Murcia in Spain, has a wood-fired range for cooking and heating, a two-ring gas hob, a well-equipped kitchen-area, including a fridge/freezer to keep those holiday treats beautifully chilled and a sink with plenty of hot water. The super comfy beds include a king-size bed, twin beds and a double cabin bed, great fun for kids to have as their holiday den, suitable for adults too.
At the back of this luxury tent is an en suite shower-room (with double-size shower tray) and across from this is a cloakroom with flushing WC, wash-basin and heated towel rail. Further down the meadow is Gascon, another safari tent sleeping six, with a French theme. In the lower meadow sits Mukota, an African themed safari tent sleeping four and a delightful Bothy built with straw bales and timber clad which is available for use if you book all three tents. This charming building is equipped with tables and seating for twenty allowing groups to dine together if they wish. Pilates classes are often available in the Bothy on a Wednesday from 10am to 11am at a cost of £15 per person per class; if you wish to attend during your holiday please let the owner know when you arrive and pay her directly.
The star attraction of this small holding is Beauty the Large Black pig, who inspired the name of the site and all three of the beautifully styled tents are named after breeds of black pig. Bittles Brook Farm has an equestrian facility and in addition to Beauty and the horses, you will encounter the owners' chickens sheep and dogs, although they are all on the farm away from your glamping meadow. Your dogs are welcome to join you in this 'away from it all holiday', but please keep them under control. Black Pig Retreats has bags of space for a game of football, cricket, rounders or kite flying; as the farm name suggests there is a brook and a pond to explore, so please supervise children at all times. The village shop and pub are a fifteen and thirty minute walk along footpaths and lanes.
When you are ready to explore farther afield, Black Pig Retreats is in a very central location; the hilltop town of Shaftesbury is a five minute drive and has an array of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. The Jurassic Coast is one hour away, with the geological icons of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, or the sandy beaches at Weymouth or Sandbanks are a similar distance.
Longleat is just over half an hour away, home to the world's longest maze, not to mention lions, tigers and monkeys, or mysterious Stonehenge is half an hour in the opposite direction. The Georgian City of Bath with its historic spas and the Cathedral City of Salisbury are just under an hour away. If you've brought bicycles with you, the New Forest National Park has miles of tracks through ancient woodland, or you can hire bikes in the forest at Burley or Brockenhurst.
The ethos of Black Pig Retreats is to tread gently upon the landscape, this is an opportunity to leave technology behind and embrace the natural beauty that surrounds you, minimising your impact upon the countryside. The family make every effort to use environmentally friendly products, encouraging guests to recycle and minimise their carbon footprint. Electricity is produced from solar panels and is limited to lighting, running the fridge and charging a mobile phone via USB ports. Turnpike Kennels and Cattery are near to Black Pig Retreats on the road out of the village toward Gillingham; you may be able to arrange day care if you wanted a dog-free day out during your holiday.
