2 Fort Cottages

1.9 miles S of Mevagissey / Sleeps 8 + cot

7 Nights from £1376 - £2991

If location is everything then this superb cottage is everything and more! Set right beside the beach in the little village of Gorran Haven, the views across the harbour and sea are amazing. Tucked at the end of a footpath and one of only three houses facing out over the bay, 2 Fort Cottages is perfect for fabulous family holidays. The house is extremely well-equipped and the two big reception rooms – a kitchen/family-room and big sitting/dining-room – offer plenty of space for all. Sheltered by a stone sea wall that rises from the rocks below, the garden and slate-flagged terrace has lawns for little ones to play on and teak dining furniture for wonderful outdoor meals made all the more special by the sublime sweeping views. Private steps lead down to the beach, where sandcastle building and rock pooling will keep youngsters happily occupied, kayaks can be hired in the summer and the beachside cafe sells fresh crab sandwiches. The coastal footpath meanders along the cliffs towards the ancient fishing harbour of Mevagissey eastwards and the beautiful gardens of Caerhays Castle westwards, wonderfully scenic routes for those who love walking.

2 Fort Cottages is a wonderful place for families or groups of friends to gather together, with ample living accommodation (a 26' kitchen/family-room and a 32' sitting/dining-room) for everyone to spread out. The accommodation is reversed as it's built into the cliff so the two big reception rooms are on the top floor entry level and the four bedrooms, which share two bathrooms and a shower-room, are on the floor below. The sun-room provides space to store wetsuits and surfboards and leads out to the lawns and terraces. Gorran Haven is a small village with a general store, cafes and beach shops and a luxury boutique hotel offering spa treatments and gourmet bar food. The tiny harbour shelters the beach making it particularly safe for little children while teenagers and adults can hire dinghies and kayaks. There is more to explore in Mevagissey where ancient pubs rub shoulders with tea-rooms and gift shops, while gardeners will love wandering among the wonderful plants at the Eden Project or The Lost Gardens of Heligan. The sheltered creeks and beaches of the Roseland peninsula are a short drive away and the sailing town of St Mawes offers award-winning restaurants, pubs, galleries, shops and ferry trips. The surfing beaches, magnificent cliffs and sweeping golden sands of the north coast are further away but well worth the effort and an hour in the car. Because of the setting of 2 Fort Cottages there is no parking next to the cottage but passengers and luggage can be dropped at the end of the lane and cars then carry on to the village car park (costs £1 per day in winter and £3 per day in summer, although a weekly ticket can be purchased for £18); the plus side of this is the joy of tranquility with no traffic sounds or noisy neighbours passing to and fro!
