The beautiful historic village of Mayfield is the home of Ancient Cottage, a scrumptious semi-detached weather-boarded period cottage which offers its guests an abundance of quirky charm with its low ceilings, wooden floors and delightful south-facing rear garden.
As you enter the living-room, the cottage begs you to relax into its deep soft sofas whilst taking in its lashings of exposed beams, bread oven and wood-burner. If you look carefully there is even a scene of village life painted on one of the whitewashed walls.
With an area for dining, the restful living-room leads through to a sunny cottage kitchen with terracotta tiled floor, breakfast-bar, and door to the pretty enclosed rear garden; perfect for a lazy late morning coffee or al fresco supper. There is also access to the cottage’s only WC. From the living-room there is a door that leads to the original steep wooden stairs, do take care, which open out into the two interconnected bedrooms and en suite with its roll-top bath and shower over.
Famous for the legend of St Dunstan and his battle with the devil, who later lent his name to one of the four impressive village churches, Mayfield offers guests a foodie fest, not only with the Middle House inn and popular Pink Cabbage cafe, but with a further pub, an excellent deli, first class butcher, a bakery and wine merchants offering locally produced sparkling wine along with the village's own gin. Whether dining out or eating in, with Ancient Cottage tucked just yards from the village centre, the options on your doorstep are extensive for tasting the best that the area has to offer.
Situated on a ridge high above the Rother Valley and just nine miles from the cosmopolitan spa town of Tunbridge Wells, the cottage offers guests a perfect nest from which to enjoy country walks straight from the door or fly off and visit the sandy beaches at Camber, the hustle and bustle of Brighton seafront, experience the captivating Sussex Heritage Coast, find walks through the High Weald, step in Winne the Pooh’s footsteps at Ashdown Forest, boat and fish at Bewl Water or explore some of the area’s historic and cultural heritage at Glyndebourne, Bateman's, Scotney Castle, Sissinghurst Castle Garden and Penshurst Place and Gardens.
Ready and waiting for you all year round, Ancient Cottage and the rich diversity of this corner of the south are perfect for relaxing short breaks or a full-blown exploring adventure.
