Hidden deep in the truly peaceful, unspoilt north Devon countryside, in the grounds of an historic castle, lies Affeton Barton; a 16th Century farmhouse, newly renovated to a very high standard.
It is spacious, welcoming and dog-friendly, and will provide a holiday to remember forever. Affeton Barton has its own large dedicated garden, but guests are warmly invited to use the tennis court, the open-air seasonal swimming pool, and explore and enjoy the beautiful castle grounds.
As you would expect in a traditional property like this, there is a large farmhouse kitchen, with all mod-cons yet great character, and a sitting-room, with a wood-burner, at the heart of the house. It also offers four very comfortable bedrooms, with a choice of super-king or twin beds, and each with a selection of antique furniture. There are brand new contemporary bathrooms, and the most welcoming atmosphere throughout.
Generations of children have grown up here, with the freedom to roam the estate's woodlands, the river at the foot of the valley, and the footpaths and bridleways. We hope that guests will make the most of this very special setting! Please do keep children and dogs with you at all times, and with the livestock in mind, so that you enjoy exploring safely. The swimming pool is available in June, July and August, but please note it is not heated, so you may choose to bring wetsuits with you!
The Owners live in the castle but you will feel as if this majestic place is all your own.
Affeton Barton is semi-detached, and is the greater part of an ancient Devon long house. For your convenience, a second staircase is available, which provides additional access to bedroom four (if Affeton Barton is booked in full, for eight guests), however you are able to access this bedroom from the main part of the property as well. For bookings for only six guests, this bedroom will be excluded.
This is an historic property, with plenty of quirky character that makes it a unique and memorable stay for all. The house has been beautifully renovated and furnished in keeping with its character, yet with modern day living and expectations very much in mind.
As well as Affeton Barton itself, you have access to an original cobbled courtyard, for private parking, and an excellent covered area by the back door; ideal for cleaning and drying dogs, taking off muddy boots and for hanging up wet coats - though, of course, we hope the weather is fabulous for you!
There is a further outbuilding, which is a link from the farmhouse to the garden, and a charcoal barbecue, perfect for semi al fresco evening meals. You will also have use of a utility-room, and a traditional larder, with a large fridge/freezer to supplement the fridge in the kitchen. We do advise that these two rooms are best kept out of bounds for children, as this is where the private water supply filtration controls are.
We hope you will love this extraordinary property, whether an extended family or a group of friends gathering for a special occasion.
