Walk up the little path through three acres of grounds and woods and there you'll find delightful Ashley's Shack, sat in an idyllic spot up above a large lake. Painted a pretty pale blue inside with its own sheltered patio and beautiful views over the lake, this charming cabin is the perfect place for a romantic break in the South Hams.

Inside is just as special as outside, with all you could need - including a large comfy bed strewn with gorgeous linen, throws and cushions, a cosy wood-burner to cuddle up in front of, a galley kitchen for rustling up scrummy suppers and a small but perfectly formed shower-room.

The sheltered patio - with a barbecue, table and chairs - is a lovely place for an evening drink or meal on a summer's night. The owners even provide a lovely box of locally-made goodies, including their own home-made honey and local cheeses. You may well decide just to stay put, soaking up the sounds of the dawn chorus in the early morning and the owls to-whit ta-whooing across the woods in the evenings.

With little or no light pollution the stars can be amazing, however we would recommend bringing a torch as the walk up to Ashley's Shack from the car park can be quite dark if there's no moon. Be sure to also bring some bird books and possibly something on the stars, as you will no doubt consult them both.

Found on the main road between Totnes, with its interesting Friday morning market and eco-friendly shopping centre, and Dartmouth, with its proud naval tradition, this is a fantastic spot. There can be some road noise, but the site is just so gorgeous we have no doubt you will be enchanted.

There are some great beaches and coves to explore in the South Hams, not least Blackpool Sands - one of Devon's loveliest beaches - which is just a short drive. So do your exploring during the day knowing you will return to this wonderful spot in the evening to unwind and relax.

On arrival, don't worry about dragging your luggage along the path, the owners provide a tractor to carry all your supplies up to this lovely cabin. Poppy Yurt is found elsewhere on the same site but you will be quite private. This is a real piece of rural heaven and perfect for a truly relaxing break.
