"They're so cool" seems to be the universal reaction to seeing the distinctive, highly polished, curvy Airstreams. And cool Airstream 1234 certainly is. Gleaming inside and out, it's tucked into a quiet corner of 20 acres of rolling south Devon countryside - with views of a beautiful lake, grounds to explore and a small flower-bordered patio complete with hot tub - just a mile from the riverside village of Dittisham and within easy reach of delightful Dartmouth.
Inside, the furnishings are totally in-keeping, retaining the retro feel but ensuring that all mod-cons, and we mean all, are provided - TV, sound system, WiFi, combination oven, induction hob, fridge, dishwasher, power shower, proper flushing toilet and even under-floor heating and air conditioning.
Built in 1956, Airstream 1234 is a 'Sovereign of the Road' model and epitomises the style of Wally Byam, the founder of Airstream trailers. Owned by a member of Wally Byam's Caravanners Club, the original stickers from a 1961 Omaha, Nebraska meeting are still on the windows. The current Owners have lovingly refurbished and restored this American icon of road travel.
There are burnt orange leather seats in the sitting-area and a table that can seat up to four and can be moved around for having dinner, or landing a drink or cup of tea whilst watching the TV. The bedroom is gorgeous, with lovely Egyptian cotton bed linen, fluffy towels and lots of retro fittings that are so in-keeping. Clever use of space means that all the kitchen appliances are on-hand but tucked away neatly behind shiny walnut finish doors.
The shower-room is compact, but the hot water is on-tap and the shower itself oh so powerful. In the winter this is a cosy retreat with under-floor heating and comfortable seating and in the summer you will no doubt want to explore the lovely grounds, watch the wild birds on the patio whilst having an early morning coffee, relax in the hammock or admire the iridescent flashing wings of numerous dragon flies that flit over the lake in front of you. Or, at any time of year, while away the hours in the hot tub - bliss.
There is also access to an outhouse with washing machine and boot/coat storage for your use. For those with a competitive spirit there is a shared games-room complete with pool table, table-football and table-tennis. Tennis rackets and balls can be found stored in the games-room, so why not try out a bit of serve and volley on the tennis court.
This part of south Devon is renowned for some glorious beaches - try Blackpool Sands just six miles away or Dartmouth with its fascinating proud naval history as well as some great restaurants and stylish shops. Greenway, Agatha Christie's restored home, is close by and well worth a visit (we advise you book in advance).
Boat hire is available locally as well as stand up paddle boards and kayaks and, with wonderful walks from your doorstep, there is so much to see and do in this area with the added benefit of returning to the iconic Airstream 1234 at the end of the day.
