Catalpa Studio (named after an Indian bean tree) is found down a narrow lane in Coombe, one of Dartmoor’s prettiest hamlets. The Owner, an artist with an adjoining studio, lives across the courtyard and has decorated this lovely barn with flair. The spacious kitchen has wooden hand-crafted units and steps up to the sitting/dining-room, with huge doors folding back to reveal French windows out to the enclosed garden, perfect for enjoying the antics of the Owner’s chickens. There is a single bedroom and a wet-room on the ground floor and steep wooden stairs lead up into the delightful double bedroom with its cast iron bed. On a warm summer’s evening, take a bottle of wine and sit on the steps leading down to the river which borders the Owner’s property (see photograph – please take care). With the moor on the doorstep and Ashburton a short drive, this is the perfect retreat.
