Dorset’s World Heritage Jurassic Coast is close to this comfortably furnished, single-storey, spacious cottage. Set within the grounds of the owner’s home, The Stables is self-contained with its own extremely private garden, which is a gardener’s delight – secluded, west-facing and with wonderful flowers, shrubs and trees dividing the lawned areas. An entrance hall gives access to the en suite bedroom and the comfortable, roomy sitting-room which has French windows out to the garden.

Set in the heart of Thomas Hardy’s rural Dorset, between Dorchester and the Saxon town of Wareham, this cottage is within easy reach of Lulworth Cove and the beaches of Studland and Weymouth.

The Jurassic Coast covers the whole stretch of the coastline from Studland to Lyme Regis and, apart from the breathtaking scenery, there is a wonderful choice of sandy beaches, rocky coves, clifftop walks and woodland strolls. The Purbeck peninsula takes in: Studland, where there are miles of sandy beaches and shallow waters, with a backdrop of pine woods and heathland surrounding the eastern fringes of Poole Harbour; Swanage, a traditional seaside town; and then the dramatic rock formations of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door as you head to the west.

It is easy to find unspoilt villages off the beaten track, such as Worth Matravers, with its little rocky beach at Windspit, and Kingston Matravers, with views down to Corfe Castle. Inland Dorset has just as much to offer, for example: Maiden Castle just outside Dorchester, one of the region’s largest iron age fortresses; Thomas Hardy’s cottage and Cloud’s Hill, Lawrence of Arabia’s Dorset home (both National Trust). However, despite all this nearby, The Stables is also just the sort of property where you might decide to stay put and relax.
