KingStaying in this beautifully presented shepherd's hut gives you a rare and - so often nowadays - hard to come by opportunity to have a secret and secluded location all to yourselves. No one overlooks you here in the fields below the treeline, where the Mendip Hills dip down to the west Somerset coast.
One of the favourite spots for you to discover is a viewing platform tucked into the edge of the woodland, in the top corner of the field above the hut. From here you can see the sea and on a clear day, right across the Bristol Channel. You have exclusive use of the viewing platform and the owners provide blankets and a Stargazer telescope to take up with you - it is perfect for sundowners, wildlife watching, meditation and of course, stargazing!
The whole area leading up into the Mendips is not only one of the UK's Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty but the farmstead itself is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This means that the countryside here is unspoilt.
The magic of this very special experience includes a hot tub and a tranquil natural spring-fed pond with a little jetty. Lady's Well Shepherd's Hut has the sense of an oasis. The hut and its hot tub sit in a fully enclosed garden along with the pond, which you will only ever share with the visiting birds - ducklings in the spring, kingfishers if you are lucky and buzzards high up on the thermals above the ridge of the valley.
The adventure starts when you park up your car and load your belongings into a golf buggy. The route to the hut takes you on a short walk or ride, gently uphill through an historic orchard - in the autumn the trees are laden with delicious apples.
Lady's Well Shepherd's Hut is a far cry from the original versions that used to enable shepherds to stay with their flock, as they moved to the seasonal grazing grounds. There is a king-size bed with a deep-sprung mattress and crisp bedding. An en suite shower-room with plentiful hot water, a proper flushing WC and even a heated towel rail. A little wood-burning stove is a cosy focal point for out-of-season breaks and in addition, there is under-floor heating. The kitchen area is well-equipped, should you wish to cook for yourselves. If you can't quite take the step to be gadget-free, to complete your rural hideaway, there is even 4G broadband.
Just a short stroll down to the village, there is a pub, shop and Chinese takeaway. For a change of scenery, you can set off to the long sandy beach at Weston-Super-Mare, just three miles away at the bottom of the valley where you can look across the sea to the tiny wildlife islands of Flatholm and Steepholm. The Victorian pier and the long promenade are great for strolling on a warm summer's day or even on a blustery out-of-season one to blow the cobwebs away! Alternatively, head up into the Mendip Hills and take in the incredible panoramic views right across the Somerset Levels or climb the trails to the top of the famous Cheddar Gorge and the less well known but equally stunning, Ebbor Gorge.
