Stylish comfort and retro chic abound in this beautifully renovated Victorian cottage found in the sleepy fishing village of Portloe. The whitewashed terrace of nine former coastguard cottages sits high above the tiny cove with wonderful views along the coast.
Oak floors, wool rugs and panelled walls painted in muted Farrow & Ball tones sit happily with lovely furnishings and wonderful artwork. With a wood-burner for cosiness in the chilliest months and French doors out to a terrace set with teak furniture (including reclining steamer chairs for lazy summer days) and a Weber barbecue, 9 Coastguard Terrace ticks all the boxes.
This delightful cottage has a contemporary kitchen with an original slate floor, fully equipped with all necessary appliances. The sitting/dining-room is spacious with a big comfortable sofa and retro armchairs made cosy with cushions and throws. Double doors lead out to the gated slate-paved terrace, a lovely place to sit and enjoy views to the sea and leisurely meals when the sun shines. Steep cottage stairs lead up to the two bedrooms, one with sea views and a comfortable double bed and the other with twin beds and a bespoke built-in cabin bed (with full-size single mattress, recommended for children over eight only). The bathroom is contemporary and bright, with a separate shower cubicle and a bath with sea views – what a treat when soaking aching muscles after a day exploring the dramatic and rugged coastline!
Steep steps lead up to a raised lawn and barbecue area with outstanding views across the rooftops towards the sea.
There is space to park outside on arrival to unload luggage and the village car park is just 50 yards away (with an honesty-box). Portloe is a quintessentially Cornish village on the beautiful Roseland peninsula, with sandy beaches and sheltered tree-lined creeks to explore; Carne and Pendower are particularly family-friendly with parking right by the beach. There are stone-built cottages clustered around a tiny sheltered cove where just a few small fishing boats ply their trade and lobster pots line the slipway. The Lugger Hotel – recently named 'Best Seaside Hotel' by the Sunday Times – sits right on the water’s edge and offers superb dining with amazing views, while The Ship Inn along the road is a traditional pub serving homely food.
There are special gardens to explore at Heligan, Caerhays and Trelissick (accessed by the King Harry Ferry), as well as the wonders of the Eden Project, all within just 10 miles. St Mawes is a sailing haven, with an ancient castle, boat trips around the creeks, ferries crossing to Falmouth each day and five star restaurants at the Hotel Tresanton and Idle Rocks Hotel. This is a wonderful area to explore with the South West Coast Path passing through the village, lovely sandy beaches and farm shops selling local produce.
The Cathedral City of Truro is nearby, with cobbled streets, narrow lanes and an eclectic mix of shops, wine bars and eating places. The dramatic cliffs and surfing beaches of the north coast are less than an hour away, well worth the trip and a wonderful day out for budding surfers and paddle boarders.
