Poachers Cottage is at the heart of the historic north Devon fishing village of Appledore, set in a little cobbled courtyard off the iconic Irsha Street, a stone's throw from the water where the wide estuary of the River Taw meets the open sea.

The cottage is in the perfect location for strolling along the Quay watching the sailing boats, sampling the local deli, cafes and restaurants, and visiting the art and craft galleries that are tucked away in the traditional network of tiny alleyways. Walkers could try the South West Coast Path, which runs less than 20 steps from the front door, across the sand dunes and landmark pebble ridge towards Westward Ho! and beyond.

Appledore is well served for friendly local pubs, many with great food and live music to enjoy. Step out of the pretty courtyard and try the Royal George, a recently reopened and already widely-renowned gastro pub for the most stunning views and a delicious menu. Appledore has many events running through the year – the acclaimed and star-studded Appledore Book Festival takes place every September, there's a carnival and regatta in the summer, regular gig-rowing spectacles and more.

The ground floor of this cosy cottage has a sitting-room with characterful fireplace and a kitchen/dining-room with a stone floor that is ideal for four-legged friends who might have taken a dip in the sea. Steep turning cottage stairs (with handrails) lead up to the two bedrooms which overlook the courtyard. There are two bathrooms upstairs too – one en suite to the main bedroom with a bath and shower, and the other with a large walk-in shower.

For those who want to explore further afield, a Torridge Council parking 'tourist pass' is only £40 per week, and can be used across the district. The nearest car park is tucked just behind Poachers Cottage, so only a few minutes' walk away.

Visiting Instow across the estuary is a must – there's a seasonal passenger ferry which adds to the experience. Instow has a fabulous long sandy beach which is dog-friendly all year round. You can also walk, or of course cycle, along the famous Tarka Trail which is on the Instow side of the estuary.

Westward Ho! is only a couple of miles away, either on foot across Northam Burrows or a few minutes' drive, and with a wide, two mile long sandy beach it's worth a visit. For more rugged scenery head along the coast towards the unique car-free coastal village of Clovelly and on to Hartland Point where dramatic cliffs and rocky coves are a treat for those who want to head off the beaten track.

In the other direction, some of the most fantastic surfing beaches are a draw too, whether you are a participant or a spectator. Try Saunton Sands, where the beach stretches for miles, or Croyde and Woolacombe. To add to the variety there is very easy access to Exmoor National Park inland from Combe Martin, where Exmoor literally meets the sea.

The market town of Bideford and the main town of north Devon, Barnstaple, are both within easy reach with historical attractions, weekly markets, shopping and more.
