This is one very special home in one very special location - welcome to Roughtor Barn. Surrounded by acres of open moorland, at the base of majestic Roughtor (Cornwall's second highest peak and pronounced ROW-tor) this unique and utterly gorgeous retreat is a must for those seeking the ultimate escape from it all.

From stomps across the moorland, hiking up a tor or two, watching the bird and wildlife around you or even a day at the beach, for the north coast is close by, Roughtor Barn will soon have you feeling on top of the world.

Approached down a long unmade track in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, behind the unassuming facade of this once humble agricultural building, prepared to be wowed by the most stunning, interior designed home.

The open plan kitchen is the perfect space for creating feasts for your loved ones and there's plenty of farm shops in the area for picking up some local produce, whilst the stunning sitting-area with its high vaulted ceiling and most impressive bespoke driftwood chandelier really is the place to relax with a glorious wood-burner at its heart, a little library of books and a bit of Dylan or Bowie on the turntable - yes there's even a record player with a great selection of LPs.

There's a change of feel in the snug, accessed via a steep paddle board staircase, a real chill out zone and ideal for younger members who need their fix of gaming or want to watch a holiday film.

The dining-table takes pride of place at Roughtor Barn, sat smack bang in front of the bi-fold doors framing that most magnificent of views - this is one table you will not be asking to leave in a hurry. On warmer days open up the doors and bring the outside in or while away a sunny day on the decking whilst the children have fun in the garden (sometimes frequented by the odd sheep - well this is the countryside) and as day turns to dusk watch the moon rise and the stars start to glisten in the sky; it's quite magical!

Time for bed and what a choice we have. The bunk bedroom is like no other, with each bed having a four-foot wide mattress and plenty of head space, so even the adults will be clambering for the top bunk! The second bedroom is terribly romantic with soft shades of cream and white ensuring a blissful night's sleep. Set the other side of the living-room is the main bedroom, what a room. Opulent, dramatic, and designed with a nod and a wink to the moorland setting it is quite spectacular, with a super-king size bed for added luxury and of course its own en suite bathroom.

Babies up to the age of 6 months old are welcome at Roughtor Barn.

You're not totally on your own as there is one other property Poldue House (2365) across the courtyard so why not bring more friends and rent them both for a real celebration.

Personally, we wouldn't want to leave and would spend the whole holiday at Roughtor Barn but hop back in the car and there are more adventures to be had.

The exciting north coast, with its fabulous beaches at Polzeath and Daymer Bay, is only a short drive away as is the fishing village of Port Isaac, of Doc Martin fame. Looking to dine out, you won't be disappointed, this is foodie heaven with an abundance of celebrity and award-winning chefs serving up tempting delights at Padstow, Rock and Port Isaac, and if you like a bit of history Pencarrow House and gardens and Lanhydrock (National Trust) are a great day out. The nearby town of Wadebridge is a vibrant town full of independent shops, cafes and restaurants and one of the starting points of the Camel Trail taking you out to Padstow on the coast in one direction and Bodmin in the other, perhaps stopping off at the Camel Valley Vineyard along the way to sample some award-winning wine.
