Description

Perfect for mixed age groups this elegant, tastefully furnished Grade II Listed period house, with its striking Georgian facade, positively radiates character and historic charm. Set in the heart of the pretty village of Nether Stowey, south-facing Poole House was once owned by a local farmer and tanner of the same name whose interest in literature led to a friendship with Coleridge and Wordsworth in the late 18th Century. Coleridge is believed to have written The Ancient Mariner here, reputedly composing The Lyrical Ballads with Wordsworth in a first floor room featuring an unusual barrelled ceiling. A house for the discerning, its substantial drawing-room has polished wooden floors and an enormous stone fireplace housing a wood-burner, and across the black and white floored hall the gracious dining-room comfortably accommodates everyone. In the kitchen, where a second, wooden staircase leads to the first floor, the focal point is the gas-fired Aga in the inglenook, complemented by cream Chalon units and painted wood panelling. The spacious library is a relaxing room for reading or listening to music, the playroom beyond ideal for children. The delightful, unexpectedly large enclosed rear garden includes a children’s slide, with table-tennis and a dartboard in the games-room. Upstairs are the magnificent master bedroom, sharing a split-level en suite bathroom with the first twin room, a second en suite double bedroom, and the twin bedded ‘Book Room’ – where the two renowned poets penned their famous works. At the top of the house, accessed by another, steeper staircase, two further bedrooms and a bathroom nestle cosily beneath the eaves. With the spectacular Quantocks practically on the doorstep, there are endless footpaths and bridleways to explore – and beautiful Poole House will be there to welcome you home each evening. Please note the lower rent band applies from 2 June to 31 August. Please note that the changeover times are 4pm on arrival and 10am on departure.
