Truro Christmas Market

Whether you’ve got sack loads of Christmas shopping left to do or just fancy getting into the festive swing of things, you can’t beat a classic Christmas market. Our top pick? Truro’s annual Christmas Street Markets.

Not only is Cornwall's great little city a fantastic backdrop to the festive atmosphere, but if you head in on a late-night Wednesday date, the whole city stays up late to celebrate until 9pm. You’ll have your pick of all the shops along with the Street Markets in Boscawen Street and, if there’s one scheduled, a fair on Lemon Quay. With that in mind, let’s take a look at when everything’s on and what you can expect…

When are they?

Our Experience

Being the keen beans that we are, we visited on the first available opportunity: Wednesday 27th November. Despite the weather forecast looking positively dreary, we arrived in Truro at around 6.30pm to find it wasn’t a wash out at all – the streets were positively packed with people looking to kick start the holidays. So much so, parking was tricky to come by; you’ll want to have a few options up your sleeve. Our top tip? Make use of the city’s free late-night park and ride service.

Parked up and raring to go, we started out listening to some live music to get the festive feelings flowing, before heading over to Boscawen Street to check out the Street Markets. The first thing I spotted was the huge range of food and drink options on offer – you could go to every Christmas market date and eat something totally different (now there’s an idea). From classic Christmas flavours like mulled wine and turkey rolls to tastes from afar served up by the likes of Punk Thai, there really was something to suit everyone. If street market food isn’t your jam, you’ll be pleased to know Truro is not short of top-quality pubs and restaurants (though you might want to book a table – lots of them looked very busy during our trip). And if you’ve got room afterwards? There were plenty of tempting sweet treats up for grabs, from decadent cupcakes to stuffed churros (we recommended the salted caramel). When it comes to present ideas, you won't be short on inspiration while wandering around Boscawen Street. We spotted everything from gorgeous jewelry and tempting knitwear to handmade festive soaps and artisan ceramics. There's also plenty of quirkier items up for grabs too, we spied some very cool glass bottle style clocks and positively charming printed bandannas for dogs. From here, we headed over to the Made in Cornwall Christmas Fair in Lemon Quay. The rain had started to come down a little heavier at this point, so it was a very popular haunt. Inside the marquee we discovered a plethora of Cornish goodies – from local drinks, spirits and produce to stunning artwork, artisan candles and charming pottery all made right here in Cornwall. I didn’t waste the opportunity and stocked up on some of my favourite flavours from Kernow Chocolate. Some are gifts.

Back outside, we took another wander around the city to soak up the atmosphere. The festive lights were strung up and down the streets giving Truro a very merry vibe, meanwhile the Cathedral was looking as imposing and picturesque as ever. The shops joined in too, with Christmas-themed window displays and everybody looked positively cheerful despite the persistent mizzle. Our verdict? A must do Christmas activity while in Cornwall this December.
