Snow-on-Sea: Top Ten Best Places To Be

The ten best places to be in the South West when it snows somewhere rare:

1. Mousehole Pier – make a snowboat and decorate it with something bright so it blends in with the lights
2. Burgh Island – imagine being cut off by the snowdrift and not the sea
3. Osmington White Horse, Dorset – if you can find it in amongst the snow
4. Kilve Beach, Somerset – play Ice Age man and wipe away the snow drift to find giant fossils, so much less mobbed than Dorset
5. Porlock Hill, Exmoor – at 1 in 4 it’s the steepest hill in SW England, it climbs 1300ft in 2 miles, so great place for rolling giant snowballs and sledging
6. The Slips, Gorran Haven – there’s a 45 degree field where all the schoolkids go when it snows and it’s a gorgeous slope that become a mini-bobsleigh run
7. Lemon Quay, Truro – Cornwall’s only city, with some great shops and home to The Drummer, a bronze sculpture of a man drumming with his ‘tackle hanging out’ so you can check to see whether it really does shrink in the cold
8. The branchline train between St Erth and St Ives – a 12 minute ride with an iced over estuary, snowcapped golf course, frosted Carbis Bay valley and viaduct and the St Ives light made even brighter by a fresh snow fall
9. St Michael's Mount  look at it through a telescope while it snows and it could be a magical snowglobe castle
10.Wistman's Wood, Dartmoor  they look like the dark woods in David Bowie's Labyrinth on a good day so let's see what a good dusting of the white stuff does to them...
