Car-free in South Devon

Car-free in South Devon

Day 1

Travel in style, under steam, on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway from the seaside resort of Paignton to the bustling, picturesque little town of Dartmouth. Combine your train ticket with a cruise around the harbour or a trip up the River Dart to bohemian Totnes, where an open top bus will complete your journey back to Paignton. Alternatively, you can take the Greenway Ferry from Dartmouth to Greenway, where Agatha Christie used to spend her summers.

Day 2

Take a Canoe Adventure on the River Dart. You can choose just how adventurous you want to be; trips can be tailored to suit everyone from small children and adult novices to bold explorers.

Day 3

Hire bikes or canoes from Saddles and Paddles for a day out exploring Exeter at a leisurely pace via its canals and towpaths.

The Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail

Fancy going off-road but want it easy-going? Hit the Tarka Trail. This 35 mile former railway line is a Sustrans benchmark in more ways than one. It’s free of traffic (bar the odd horse), fills you in on the history and the wildlife as you go and lays on a series of artist-made benches, each one acting as a resting place, waymarker or shelter.

Things to do in Shaldon

Things to do in Shaldon

Shaldon is a fantastic village facing an attractive estuary with a small village charm but also a good range of shops, pubs and cafes. It lies in a sheltered valley and stares out at the larger town of Teignmouth which it is connected to by a bridge and a ferry.
