Four friends got together one summer evening over a barbecue on a beach. The beach was Church Cove, on the Lizard peninsula. And the four friends went on to be the founders of Barefoot Kitchen. The idea was spawned from discussions that night about their innate love of Cornwall. The food, surfing, the outdoor lifestyle, being able to hang out together on a beach, music, design. This conceived a business concept based on those ideals. As they say on their Web site:
‘Barefoot Kitchen offers the Cornish lifestyle to everyone who wants to share it. Barefoot products for beach and outdoor living, simple recipes using locally sourced food, music and films that encapsulate the perfect evening on the beach with friends.’
Sounds good to us. So we’ve got hold of some of their Barbecue Buckets to give away. Inspired by the story of Barefoot’s barbecue origins, we’d like to hear your barbecue-based West Country stories. A memory you have as a child. A particular open grill recipe disaster. A description of the Roles and Rotas within your family as to who’s in charge of the tongs! Anything you’d like to tell us that involved a barbecue or eating al fresco. If you’ve got a picture or two to illustrate the scene, even better.
Send your stories to us and we will give the best five inspiring stories, or just the ones that made us laugh, a feature on our Web site and a Barefoot BBQ Bucket in time for the Jubilee Bank Holiday. You can send up to three stories and we’ll be looking for originality, quirkiness, a story that tells us something new about where we live, something other visitors can empathize with – anything you’ve experienced whilst barbecuing in the South West. Even if it doesn’t earn you a BBQ Bucket, you may get a mention on our Facebook page at the very least.
Whenever the sun shines, Lucy at Barefoot Kitchen takes her bucket down to Church Cove, or neighbouring Dollar Cove. She’s not really the cook, but chef Roger has a fab family recipe they like to call ‘Paella on a stick’. Get a barbecue skewer and impale prawns, chorizo, chicken and olives for a Mediterranean style kebab. Just remember to soak wooden skewers so they don’t burn…
You could try this idea for another dish: ‘Spaghetti Bolognese on a Stick’ anyone? You could use meatballs, or steak chunks, skewered with chunks of onion and cherry tomatoes then drizzle with herb oil before serving. We’re not quite sure how you could doctor a pasty to become a kebab though – or would that be sacrilegious?
Email your story, along with any accompanying pictures to firstname.lastname@example.org by 25th May 2012. Please see the T&Cs below for more details.
