Setting off at 10:15am from the centre of the Cathedral City of Exeter, stage five of the tour is taking a scenic Devonshire route encompassing 112 miles around this part of the Jurassic coastline. (You can download the official route map here.) The professionals are expected to take round four hours to complete their course, but if you feel inspired to attempt their endeavours, there is always the Exe Estuary Trail – a leisurely route of a mere 12 miles in comparison!
Exeter itself is very cycle-friendly with many flat, traffic-free routes. Once you’ve conquered the World Heritage Site Jurassic Coast, you’re going to need a place to crash out at the end of the day. Stay in a cottage on Dartmoor, where walks and outdoor routes abound, in easy reach of a day trip to Exmouth. There are plenty of things to do in South Devon whilst the cycling shorts are on the washing line.
