Make: Cornwall BookIn the news
Make: Cornwall is a new, locally produced book about 25 craftspeople in the South West, featuring portraits of them, their studios and the inspiring landscapes of Cornwall.
While demonstrating the diversity and quality of contemporary craft in our county, the book is also about the joy of the hand made, the passion and integrity of makers, and the power of a very special place.
Aiming to shine a light on some of the most exciting makers working in Cornwall today, Ponsanooth-based photographer Anya Rice, together with writer Katherine Sorrell (who lives in Penzance), travelled the length and breadth of the county to find, photograph and interview their selection of modern Cornish craftspeople.
More than two years in the making, Make: Cornwall has just launched. The high quality hardback book has an elegantly minimal design and a striking cover that features a cyanotype image (an early form of photography) of local seaweed created by Falmouth-based lifestyle brand Paper Birch. Inside the book you will find a world of intriguing, hand-made pieces: beach plastic jewellery, sunglasses made from denim, digital embroidery, exceptional ceramics, beautiful stained glass… and lots more.
The limited-edition book is already selling quickly, and is stocked by Tate St Ives, Waterstones Truro and the Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, as well as bookshops and lifestyle stores in both Cornwall and Somerset. Make: Cornwall is also curating an exhibition of contemporary Cornish craft at the prestigious Breeze Art & Maker’s Fair, which will take place at Trereife House, near Penzance, from 13 – 15 September 2019.
