William the Conqueror landed here in 1066 before the historic Battle of Hastings. At the time the harbour was a bustling port but over time the coast has receded and now the local village is over a mile away from the beach. These days the shingle beach is pretty quiet with good views over the channel. Pay and display parking is available nearby and dogs are allowed although restrictions may apply in high season.

Nearby walk

Park for free for an hour and enjoy a saunter around the common. This short circular walk of just under a mile has easy access and flat tarmac paths, ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs. There are public conveniences available close to the start and cafes close by.

Nearby town

Queen Victoria loved this place, so much in fact that her son King Edward V11 bestowed it a royal title in 1909, one of only a handful in the country. These days it's a bustling spa town (without a spa unfortunately) however it does have a great selection of high quality shops and restaurants. The Pantiles is a pedestrian area close to the town centre with exquisit Georgian architecture and well deserves its place on the shortlist of "best high streets in Great Britain".
