October half-term is a welcome break before Christmas - by the time it arrives a holiday from the school routine will be most welcome. At least in the South and West, the weather adds to the atmosphere rather than ruins it.
An autumn hike over blustery moors makes for much more of an achievement, and the roaring wood fire on your return is appreciated just that little bit more with a mug of hot milk warmed on the Aga. The beach is all the more exciting, wrapped up for a blowy adventure, sheltering from the salty spray, finding little treasures washed up from an out-at-sea storm, then diving into the nearest pub for the local brew. That’s not to say there won’t be sunshine. We’ve a different climate in the far west; a clear day on the coast can see you leave the binoculars behind and from a hilltop the 360 degree panorama is hard to beat.
