A narrow lane leads to the pretty creekside village of South Pool, on the Kingsbridge estuary. Yachtsmen from Salcombe often sail up the creek on the tide to pop in for a meal at the excellent Millbrook Inn, which is next door to Magnolia Cottage. A babbling stream runs behind the cottages and pub – take care with children on the terrace and around the water. This charming, comfortable cottage is furnished with flair. There are quarry tiles throughout the ground floor with rugs in the sitting-room, which has an open fire. The dining-room has a wood-burner and there is a stylish, contemporary kitchen with French doors leading to the terrace. The South Hams is one of the loveliest parts of south Devon, there are fabulous sandy beaches within a short drive and great country and creekside walks (see photograph). Why not take the passenger ferry across to Salcombe from nearby East Portlemouth? Magnolia Cottage is a delight and is welcoming to guests all year round.
