High on the western slopes of picturesque Cadgwith cove, along a leafy lane, lies a row of former coastguards’ cottages. Steeped in the history of a bygone age they retain many original features reminiscent of a seafaring past, and each is full of character and charm. Last but one in the terrace is Tangle Ha’ – the right-hand white cottage in the photograph – with its magnificent views over the village to the sea. Beyond the kitchen/dining-room the south-facing sitting-room, with its oak-mantled fireplace and slate hearth, has French doors which lead, via granite steps, to the lovely sunny garden and its quite breathtaking views over Cadgwith and the ocean. Upstairs, both bedrooms have tiny ornamental Victorian fireplaces, and next to the main bedroom you will find a little nook which may well have been used in days of yore by the coastguard, as he sat on watch for many long, arduous hours. Nowadays, the view may be enjoyed sitting up instead in the wonderful bed, beautifully designed in polished natural wood. Whatever the weather, whatever the season, fully double-glazed Tangle Ha’ provides a warm, cosy base from which to explore the Lizard peninsula; alternatively, forget the car and take a leisurely stroll down the steep hill which leads to the boats and the beach – the hub of the village – and, of course, to the local inn.
