Elodie Yurt

2960 is no longer with us

If you were looking for cottages like Elodie Yurt, how about trying these:

Wend your way through the outskirts of the little village of Bishopsteignton up above the Teign estuary and a tiny private lane leads you down to a hidden gem. Elodie is a real treat, a large 20' solid ash framed yurt set in its own grounds. Remarkably comfortable and very stylish indeed, this gorgeous glamping experience is not one to be missed. The Owners have furnished and decorated with real pizzazz – a cosy wood-burner, a fantastic super king double bed with a carved ash sunburst headboard and a clear window in the yurt roof so you can stargaze from the bed – you will not be disappointed. Although you are in the Owners' grounds, there is an ancient yew tree separating you from their garden and house beyond, so you will be quite private to lounge around in the garden, or in the yurt, depending on the weather. You have a large barbecue with two gas rings as well as the main grill, so you can try your hand at preparing some yummy holiday treats. Under a large canvas parasol cover, even if the weather is a little unkind, you will be able to cook up a storm. Just opposite the yurt is your own shower-room with flushing loo and piping hot water from a strong shower and a wash-basin. Basic camping this is not - rather a touch of the unusual albeit sleeping under canvas, with wooden floor, a fridge (with freezer compartment) and two sockets, so if you can't bear to be without your electronic devices they can be charged. If you ask the Owners (the day before), they can provide a continental breakfast (at cost) so you can tuck into fresh coffee and croissants and listen to the birdsong. There is a private orchard across the stream adjoining the main garden, another lovely place to sit out and recharge the batteries. Just across the road is a large field where locals exercise their dogs. However, you and the faithful hound might prefer to take the foot ferry from nearby Teignmouth across to Shaldon, a pretty, quirky village on the southern bank of the estuary. Walk through an old smugglers' tunnel at The Ness and you are on a glorious stretch of sand where dogs are welcome and can rush around to their hearts' content. Teignmouth has a long stretch of sand on the estuary banks; don't swim here as the currents can be a bit fierce but it's great for walking the dog. Shaldon is a delight and we think you may well spend quite a bit of time there. It has one or two excellent restaurants, some great cafes and pubs, and an eclectic mix of shops to browse. The old part of Teignmouth, particularly along the sands where the local fishermen have their beach huts and stores, is also worth exploring. Then at the end of a great day out you can return to the calm and warm welcome of this very special yurt. Elodie, named after one of the Owners' daughters, is well worth a visit.
