Lostwithiel is the ancient capital of Cornwall, full of history with an enchanting mix of stone buildings, antiques shops and independent retailers. Old Quay Cottage is a sympathetically renovated, end of terrace cottage tucked away in a quiet courtyard above the banks of the River Fowey, with an enclosed terrace and waterside deck almost hanging over the shallow slow-flowing river.

All amenities of this small town are within walking distance with a bakery, deli, renowned restaurant and popular farmers' market to try. Restormel Castle and riverside walks await exploration, with picnic tables beside the water. Both north and south coasts are easily reached by train or car and the river can be followed to the picturesque sailing town of Fowey.

From the communal parking are, steps lead up to Old Quay Cottage where the open plan living-room has patio doors opening onto its south-facing, waterside terrace. The deck below (locked off for safety but guests have the access code) is a charming spot for river fishing and steps down to the foreshore mean kayaks and dinghies can be easily launched.

Inside, the sitting-area has sofas around an open fire, perfect for cosy evenings at cooler times of the year. Reclaimed slate-flooring with under-floor heating and soft rugs keep toes warm, while granite work surfaces, a range cooker and a fully equipped kitchen all reflect the cottage's high quality. There is a double bedroom and shower-room downstairs while on the first floor, the main bedroom has a balcony overlooking the water.

There are tall ships in Charlestown harbour and fishing boats unloading their catches at Mevagissey, while enthusiastic gardeners will love the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the National Trust's Lanhydrock House and gardens, all within easy reach.
