Fort Picklecombe was built in 1860 as part of the Plymouth harbour defences, and was converted into apartments in 1977 using the original dressed granite and stone walls. Every apartment has superb views over Plymouth Sound (see photograph), a renowned natural harbour and deep sea anchorage for naval, commercial and pleasure craft alike. The Song of the Sea truly lives up to its name, with large windows leading out to the balcony only yards from the water’s edge, the sound of the sea is always in the background. This lovely first floor apartment (a lift is available from the car park) is completely open plan, enabling the views to be appreciated from the galley kitchen and the bedroom-area, which is two steps up from the living area, where you can gaze out to sea from the bed. Fort Picklecombe is bounded by the 850 acre Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, which has a Grade I Listed garden and some lovely walks. The Fort has terraced landscaped gardens and a private harbour, while the nearby twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand have sandy beaches and several welcoming pubs.
