With a wonderful heated swimming pool – indoor but retractable walls and roof enable it to be open-air in hot weather – and minutes from sandy beaches and National Trust land, The Garden Apartment is a superb holiday location.

Carnethic House is an elegant Regency mansion divided into six stylish apartments (sharing the pool and sauna, which are open from 9.30am until 7.30pm and available via daily bookable slots), set in communal gardens on the edge of the sailing town of Fowey. Teak garden furniture is provided for outdoor mealtimes on the south-facing patio running the length of the apartment and adjoining the large lawn. The standard of the apartment speaks for itself, with oak flooring, leather sofas, under-floor bathroom heating, a large wall-mounted plasma television in the sitting-area and smaller flat screen televisions in each bedroom.

The kitchen is well-equipped, with a cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer with ice maker (so no need to buy the all-important ice for your holiday drinks!) and a dishwasher, whilst the cosy living-room has comfy seating where you can curl up with a good book, along with a wall-mounted electric fire which will keep you toasty warm during cooler days.

The town and waterfront are a leisurely stroll away, a yachting heaven with moorings jostling with boats of all sizes, and races and competitions during the sailing season. The narrow streets are full of shops of all kinds, plus art galleries, bakeries, cafes, restaurants and ancient pubs. The Fowey Festival of Arts and Literature is a wonderful time to visit, as is Fowey Royal Regatta week when the town buzzes with activities.

There is a lovely family beach a 15 minute walk away at Readymoney Cove, and the Eden Project and Charlestown harbour – home to some impressive tall ships – are easily accessible. You can take the ferry across the river to Polruan, or to explore the coast further east where the ancient fishing village of Polperro and bustling Looe wait to be enjoyed.

There is an allocated parking space for one car, and there are some unallocated spaces where a second car may be parked on a first come first served basis.
