Cycle Tour of Britain comes to Devon, Thursday 15th September 2011

One of the few times you can get away with wearing lycra, be inspired by the world's top cyclists who are taking to the streets of Britain for the sake of a yellow jersey.

Setting off at 10:15am from the centre of the Cathedral City of Exeter, stage five of the tour is taking a scenic Devonshire route encompassing 112 miles around this part of the Jurassic coastline. (You can download the official route map here.) The professionals are expected to take round four hours to complete their course, but if you feel inspired to attempt their endeavours, there is always the Exe Estuary Trail – a leisurely route of a mere 12 miles in comparison!Bike Backie

Exeter itself is very cycle-friendly with many flat, traffic-free routes. Once you’ve conquered the World Heritage Site Jurassic Coast, you’re going to need a place to crash out at the end of the day. Stay in a cottage on Dartmoor, where walks and outdoor routes abound, in easy reach of a day trip to Exmouth. There are plenty of things to do in South Devon whilst the cycling shorts are on the washing line.

For more information about the rest of the race visit the Tour of Britain Web site. Stage six is in Somerset, so be sure to check Our Blog for the next featured article.
