Cleaning up Gunwalloe beach with Keep Britain Tidy and being filmed by South West Tourism Alliance

It was a cold day. A Friday in mid-December when staff from Classic Cottages visited a beach in Gunwalloe, on the Lizard peninsula. We met Neil Hembrow, a BeachCare Coordinator from Keep Britain Tidy who, along with Neil Warren of Sustainability South West (South West Tourism Alliance) wanted to film our volunteer work as a promotion for local businesses in the South West getting involved in similar projects.

When we got there, the tide was out, and the tideline was eminently obvious by its manmade attributes. Fishing nets, nylon rope, miscellaneous plastic pieces. It was all tangled in the natural seaweed bank. So, we donned our gloves and manned our ‘grabber sticks’ and set about litter picking. Neil Warren set up his camera and filmed the beautiful bay as we worked to put the beach back to its former glory. Neil Hembrow worked with us to document the litter we found for his case studies, and educated the team on beach care.

"People get involved because they've got an ownership of the beach; they live there, they're so close to it, it's such an important part of their lives," explains Neil Hembrow.

The beaches are a major part of our tourism industry so it makes sense that we, as a local business dependent on tourists, do our bit to keep them at their best. You can view the three minute video  on the South West Tourism Alliance Web site.
